Visual Arts
The Stage 5 Visual Arts course is designed to enhance skills and knowledge gained in Stage 4. It specifically aims to develop an understanding of the diverse nature of visual arts and an appreciation of artworks within an historical context. Visual arts also aims to develop students ability to interpret, evaluate and appreciate artworks.
The subject matter revolves around the student’s world and encourages students to explore, develop and resolves their ideas and concepts. The Visual Arts Process Diary is also an important aspect of the students’ learning as it records students’ exploration and development of subject matter, expressive use of forms, materials and techniques as well as their understanding of the frames and their role in practice, art criticism and art history. Literacy is an important focus in this subject.

Year 9
Subject Matter: Places and Spaces – responding to our environment
Forms: Drawing and mark making with mixed media, lino printing
Art Criticism: Albrecht Durer, John Wolseley, Nelson Tjakamarra, Robert Dickerson, Jeffrey Smart and Lin Onus – subjective response to place.
Art History: The Heidelberg School and icons of nationalism, landscape conventions.
Subject Matter: The Real and Imagined
Forms: Drawing, painting on canvas, assemblage
Art Criticism: Illuminated manuscripts, Hieronymous Bosche, Franceso Goya, Salvadore Dali, James Gleeson, Robert Klippel and Simryn Gill.
Art History: The origins of fantasy and the imagination, Surrealism and Contemporary art practice.
Year 10
Subject Matter: Objects – Still Life and Abstraction
Forms: Drawing and mark making, mixed media.
Art Criticism: Margaret Olley, Margaret Preston, Paul Cezanne, Yasumasa Morimura, Olive Cotton, Max Dupain and Jan Van Steen.
Art History: Still life conventions, modern art and abstraction.
Subject Matter: Issues and Events - Peoplescape,
Forms: Mixed media relief, installation, canvas painting
Art Criticism: Peolpescape in Canberra, public sculptures and installations
Art History: History of public sculpture, conventions of painting
Assessment
- A Portfolio of two dimensional works including at least one resolved work.
- Individual relief sculpture for installation
