Pastoral
Mater Maria is first and foremost a Catholic school. We aim to provide an excellent education founded on the person of Jesus Christ and a shared Catholic worldview, from which we draw inspiration and guidance to develop the whole person. Underpinning our mission is a strong sense of community and social justice, which binds our faith to life and contemporary culture.
Our pastoral care is structured so that each child is known as a person, is challenged to reach his or her potential and feels connected to a cohesive community. A culture of attentive nurturing, established over the time when the College was run by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, has developed over the years and prevails to the present day.
We are blessed that our community mirrors the richness of life itself with girls and boys, sisters and brothers, enjoying the opportunity to be educated by professional women and men, while learning to develop quality relationships based on a healthy respect and appreciation of one another as equals.
Each student is entitled to justice and respect and offered a compassionate response and a spirit of reconciliation when mistakes are made. An adolescent’s journey can be a rollercoaster, fraught with poor decisions and guided by poor role models, which, if unaddressed, can lead to tragic consequences. Our approach to behaviour management is grounded in restorative justice and a proactive, positive stance to resolving issues before they become problematic. This allows students to discern appropriate behaviours, restore relationships with dignity and grow into socially responsible adults. These invaluable life skills serve students well after their lives have journeyed beyond school.
