Religious Education (Catholic Studies)
Religious Education (Catholic Studies) is a mandatory course which is studied for 200 hours at Stage 5. It is a Board Endorsed Course submitted to the Board of Studies on behalf of Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay systemic schools.
Course Description
Religious Education (Catholic Studies) allows students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the richness of the Catholic tradition founded in Sacred Scripture and embedded in the life of the church. It encourages students to participate critically and effectively in the church within wider society.
What will students learn about?
Religious Education (Catholic Studies) addresses the beliefs and traditions of the Catholic Church. It covers Sacred Scriptures, the history of the Catholic Church, ethical issues, social justice concerns, the concepts of discipleship and ministry, the sacraments of healing and the centrality of the Eucharist within the Catholic community.
What will students learn to do?
Students learn to identify key Scriptural references and apply them to the contemporary world. They will gather, process and communicate attitudes of their Catholic Church to a variety of ethical and social issues. Students will be able to identify and articulate key beliefs of the Catholic Church and to participate knowledgeably in liturgical celebrations of key feasts. The various modules will enable students to distinguish between scripture, historic, poetic and theological accounts of reality.
Course Requirements
Students are required to cover eight modules of which seven are compulsory. Each module will have an Assessment task attached to it.
School Certificate
Religious Education (Catholic Studies) will be awarded a Grade on the student’s School Certificate Record of Achievement. This will be awarded on the basis of school assessment only, in accordance with the Performance Descriptors set by the Board of Studies.
